During the International Day of Biosphere Reserves, Banco Sabadell wishes to join in and celebrate this day, which has been fostered by UNESCO since last year and which strives to recall the importance of these natural spaces in the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, fostering research, sustainable development and decision-making on environmental protection.
In this regard, conservation is not only key for the survival of species but also for our society and the planet’s sustainability. This is why international frameworks such as the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement are necessary in understanding what goals need to be achieved and making us aware of the need for a global commitment by all agents (citizens, companies, and governments), where every decision matters. Because of all of the foregoing, in Spain, UNESCO has a total of 53 designated biosphere reserves, located in 16 of the 17 autonomous communities, four of which are cross-border (three are shared with Portugal, and another, an intercontinental one, with Morocco).
Firm in this commitment, Banco Sabadell includes environmental preservation in our #SabadellSustainabilityCommitment framework, aligning our strategy with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments essential for advancing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. We have undertaken multiple initiatives, including:
- Ensuring an environmentally friendly transition: Our business strategy now prioritizes financing for projects critical to ecological transition. Between 2021 and 2025, we are mobilizing €65 billion for sustainable finance.
- Promoting green initiatives and technologies: Through #BStartupGreen, we support startups that provide solutions for energy transition, industry 4.0, smart cities, and the circular economy.
- Supporting marine sustainability research: Banco Sabadell Foundation’s Marine Sustainability Award honors work focused on sustainable marine resource use, addressing both traditional and emerging industries.
- Advancing carbon neutrality: We achieved internal CO2 neutrality with 100% renewable energy in facilities, photovoltaic installations, reduced plastic and paper use by 93% and 42%, respectively, and invest in reforestation projects.
- Aligning with global zero-emission targets: As a member of the UN Net-Zero Banking Alliance, we support zero emissions by 2050 in line with the Paris Climate Accords.
- Collaborating on impactful environmental initiatives: We partner with Priceless Planet Coalition (PPC) by Mastercard to plant 100 million trees by 2025, and offer Smart POS for customers to contribute to initiatives like PPC.
These actions reflect our Sabadell Sustainability Commitment, supporting a transformation toward a resilient, environmentally-conscious economy.
