By the end of 2022, Banco Sabadell had acquired 5,542 tonnes of CO2 by planting 23,580 trees to repopulate 20.6 hectares of forest lost due to the fires in Galicia. This action was carried out through CO2 Revolution, a trailblazing start-up in reforestation using the latest advances in biotechnology (drones, smart seeds and Big Data), combined with traditional means based on manual planting.

The principal objective of this action is to recover ecosystems, preserve biodiversity and neutralise the entity’s carbon footprint in order to fight climate change. It also strives to promote rural development and foster the inclusion of women from the area in the labour market.

With this project, in collaboration with CO2 Revolution a total of 20.6 hectares are being reforested, which is the equivalent of 20 football pitches. All this while respecting the biodiversity of the area through the manual planting of 8 autochthonous species: Pinus radiata, Cedrus atlantica, Salix atrocinerea, Betula celtiberica, Crataegus monogyna, Prunus avium, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Castanea sativa in Monte Vecinal in Mano Común.

Through this action, Banco Sabadell contributes to materialize the largest project carried out by CO2 Revolution so far, being the company that has made the largest investment in the reforestation project that has been carried out in Galicia and at national level.

This project confirms the Banco Sabadell Group’s commitment to adhering to quality standards in terms of social, ethical and environmental responsibility, as set out in its “Sabadell Sustainable Commitment“. In 2022, the bank reduced its carbon footprint by 60% compared to 2019 in Spain and the United Kingdom, and has made progress in its own internal footprint, achieving neutrality through energy management, consumption reduction and compensation with reforestation projects such as this one.

For Juan Carlos Sesma, CEO and Founder of CO2 Revolution, “the trust of companies like Banco Sabadell is fundamental to raise awareness and care for the environment.  Their support makes us grow further and plays a key role in the development of new technologies that will allow us to further improve biotechnology and, in turn, evolve towards a sustainable ecosystem.

According to Elena Carrera, general manager and director of sustainability and efficiency at Banco Sabadell, “with this action, the bank not only contributes to the environment in keeping with its commitment to being emission-neutral, but also fosters social development with projects that promote inclusion and equality in rural areas”.

About CO2 Revolution

Certified as one of the top 100 start-ups in the world at South Summit 2018 and top of the sustainable start-up rankings of the Coordinates Institute of Governance and Applied Economics, CO2 Revolution provides services to communities and organisations that need to carry out replanting actions, such as institutions with the goal of offsetting their carbon footprint.

In both cases, they are officially certified. CO2 Revolution is a trailblazer in the green regeneration of woodland with a method that is a revolutionary at global scale, based on Big Data, drones and intelligent seeds technology, combined with traditional and mechanised systems, which opens the door to something previously unthinkable: reforesting large tracts of land within hours at low cost. A comprehensive model that also allows the growth of ecosystems to be monitored. For more information https://co2revolution.es.
