Does it worry you when your children start driving? Institut Guttmann can help you to reflect on the topic with your loved ones in the webinar organised by Sabadell Protection, “Let’s protect our young people: Educating them about the principles of safe driving.”
How? Through the real-life testimony of someone who had a car accident and who is living with a spinal or brain injury. Spoken the way young people speak, with no moralising or attribution of blame, explaining why many accidents happen and their irreversible consequences, the webinar strives to spark a debate and reflection to change attitudes towards driving, both by young drivers as well as their parents and guardians.
Young people are the group that is most vulnerable to accidents, car accidents in particular. Although accident prevention messages are aimed at them in different media, they are not fully aware of the consequences of a serious accident. That is why, in 1991, Guttmann Institute started education campaigns to make them aware of the serious consequences of careless road use, whether on roller skates, motorbikes, scooters or in cars.
The programme is called Game Over and with the support of Sabadell Protection and the Servei Català de Trànsit more than 55,000 students in 4th year of mandatory secondary education and vocational training gained the insights and awareness delivered by the programme in 2023.
Thanks to the success of Game Over among young people, Guttmann Institute developed this special webinar.
The webinar is a part of Sabadell Protection’s sustainability strategy, under which its ‘Insurance with a cause’ project strives to move towards a more sustainable economy, linking each of its products to social and environmental causes, thanks to which it has been able to make different contributions to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the Nature Conservation Network, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, El Llindar, biobanks and the Contigo Foundation. Through its life insurance Life Care and its Health Protection Insurance, Sabadell Protection donated €40,000 as part of its commitment to the health, well-being and quality of life of individuals.
Guttman Institute is a specialist hospital which is part of SISCAT and is the only dedicated centre in Catalonia to treat complex spinal patients (CSP), recognised by the Ministry of Health since 2103. The institution has a strong social commitment to people living with disabilities through different programmes on risk and accident prevention, awareness-raising, knowledge dissemination and fostering independent living, with special emphasis on social involvement in its surrounding community. The Neurorehabilitation Hospital in Badalona treats 5,100 patients each year, of whom 1,139 are new patients with spinal and brain injuries, 357 are aged 0-16 and 106 are international patients.
The fight against dangerous driving, a commitment for all
The fight against dangerous driving is a duty that falls on everyone. From institutions, such as Guttman Institute and Sabadell Protection, to families and young people themselves, we must all work together to create a more responsible and safer driving culture.
The ‘Let’s protect our young people: Educating them about the principles of safe driving” webinar is an important step in the right direction. Through the real-life testimony of someone who had a car accident and who is living with a spinal or brain injury, the webinar is intended to spark reflection and raise awareness of the serious consequences of dangerous driving.
Driver education is of utmost importance to car accident prevention. It is important that young people learn the rules of the road from a young age and that they develop safe driving habits.
