The Contigo Foundation against women’s cancer, which aims to promote research projects to curb women’s cancer and improve the quality of life of patients, has received a cheque for €16,000 from Sabadell Protection for their Merit project, a study that has the potential to contribute to the improvement of treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients via the characterisation of immune evasion mechanisms. Montse Almirall, vice-president of the Contigo Foundation, stated: “We’re extremely grateful to Sabadell Insurance and their entire team for this big donation. It’s essential to have the support of committed companies that allow us to continue researching women’s cancer, which currently affects 1 in 8 women”.

The Merit project is led by Dr Javier Cortés, one of the world’s most renowned breast oncologists; the number one expert worldwide in HER2+ breast cancer, and the fourth highest-ranked expert in breast cancer, according to the American ranking Expertscape. This study aims to develop and optimise a combination of OAS drugs to correct aberrant splicing, thus reducing the ability of tumour cells to evade the immune system. According to Verónica Sagnier, director of the Contigo Foundation, “Research is the only path to early diagnosis, access more and better treatments and, why not, find a definitive cure for women’s cancer. And thanks to companies like Banco Sabadell, we are getting closer to achieving it!”

This donation is part of Sabadell Protection’s sustainability strategy. The ‘Insurance with a cause’ project seeks the transition to a more sustainable economy, linking each of their products to social and environmental causes. Thanks to this initiative, various contributions have already been made to both the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Xarxa per a la Conservació de la Natura.

Bernardino Gómez Aritmendi, General Manager of Sabadell Protection: “In Spain, more than 119,000 women suffer from cancer each year. That is why, since 2018, we have been donating €3 to cancer research for each Life Care Woman policy contracted, a life insurance policy that provides an advance of up to €70,000 so that our customers can focus on their fight and recovery if needed. Thanks to our customers, we have managed to donate €200,000, and collaborating with projects that are yielding such good results as the Merit project only confirms that this is the path that we must follow as a company”.

To better understand the results of the project, Sabadell Protection has organised the webinar ‘Humanising cancer: a journey to discover the future from a human perspective’, on Thursday, 25 May, from 4 to 5 pm, with Dr Javier Cortés, the number one expert worldwide in HER2+ breast cancer and fourth highest-ranked expert in breast cancer. Bernardino Gómez Aritmendi and the project’s principal investigator, Diego Marzese, will also participate.
