The 72nd Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell – Trofeo Conde de Godó got underway on Saturday with an opening day brimming with excitement. The tournament, which is played at the Reial Club de Tennis Barcelona, is yet again the biggest annual sporting event in the capital of Catalonia. Once again, Barcelona has become the epicentre of clay court tennis, drawing thousands of fans eager to enjoy this great springtime celebration of sport.

A world-class line-up

Some of the best tennis players on the circuit are among the main contenders for the title. Six of the twelve best tennis players in the world are competing in this edition: Carlos Alcaraz (3), Casper Ruud (6), Andrey Rublev (9), Stefanos Tsitsipas (10), Alex de Miñaur (11) and Holger Rune (12). That means the tournament’s last two winners, Alcaraz and Ruud, will meet again in Barcelona to continue making history. Greece’s Tsitsipas, who has played in four of the last six finals, also wants a taste of this success, having lost twice to Rafa Nadal and twice to Alcaraz. It will also be extra special to see the two-time tournament champion, Kei Nishikori, back with a Wild Card from the organisation, as well as a three-time Grand Slam tournament champion in Stan Wawrinka, who was also invited. The third and final invitation goes to the 2022 finalist, Pablo Carreño.
