The Chairman of Banco Sabadell, Josep Oliu, and CEO, César González-Bueno, have presented a donation of 32,000 euros raised through Aces Solidarios at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell – Conde de Godó Trophy. The main sponsor of this tennis tournament, now in its 73rd year, is Banco Sabadell.

This is an initiative in which Banco Sabadell donates a sum of money for every ace served by players during the tournament. Since 2008, a total of 60 organisations have been beneficiaries of the Aces Solidarios initiative, which has raised more than 460,000 euros since its launch.

This year’s edition was devoted exclusively to rare diseases. During the ceremony, 8,000 euros was presented to each of the four selected charities, reaffirming Banco Sabadell’s commitment to inclusion, research and providing support for families affected by rare diseases.

The Chairman of Banco Sabadell, Josep Oliu, emphasised that this initiative strengthens the Group’s social commitment, whilst recognising charitable organisations and individuals who devote their time and energy to those most in need. “We want to support these organisations by giving them a loudspeaker to publicise the work that they do, which involves improving the lives of others and offering support during their most difficult times”. Oliu added: “We hope that research will mean that, in the not-too-distant future, these diseases can be eradicated”.

Representatives of each of the charitable organisations attended the presentation ceremony, including Empar Cebrián, Chair of the Asociación Española Mutación GEN IQSEC2; Ricardo Fernández, Secretary of the Asociación Española Síndrome Schaaf-Yang; Gonzalo Alba, Patron of Fundación Retos Azules and Pilar García de la Granja, Chair of Fundación Querer.

Representatives of the charitable organisations that were this year’s recipients of funds raised through Aces Solidarios, spoke about the actions carried out by their organisations and thanked Banco Sabadell for organising the initiative. All the representatives emphasised the importance to them of this gesture and the support it represents for their work.

For Banco Sabadell, this tournament and the charitable activities carried out in parallel to the Open are a way of linking the Institution’s corporate values with those of sports, particularly tennis, a fair play sport based on principles such as effort, respect and the desire to excel. It also reinforces its commitment to be a bank with a purpose, supporting projects that generate real social impact and that help to move towards a fairer, more inclusive and more caring society.

Charitable organisations that were beneficiaries of this initiative:

Fundación Retos Azules (‘Familia Azul’ project)

‘Familia Azul’ is the fifth charity challenge promoted by Fundación Retos Azules in collaboration with FEDER (Federación Española de Enfermedades Raras, the Spanish federation for rare diseases). The aim of the project is to improve the quality of life for 100 families with children that suffer from rare diseases or are pending a diagnosis, combining direct financial aid of up to 3,000 euros per family with a powerful campaign to raise social awareness. The project expects to raise a total of 300,000 euros. It will take place from 2025 and into 2026, following rigorous standards, ensuring transparency and a positive social impact.

Fundación Querer

Set up in 2016, Fundación Querer is a non-profit organisation dedicated to education, research and social awareness in relation to children presenting with special educational needs, particularly language disorders, as a result of a neurological condition. Part of the FEDER network of direct care centres, the Foundation supports multi-disciplinary teams to drive developments in diagnostics, research and educational inclusion, with an innovative, inclusive and equality-based approach.

Asociación Española Mutación Gen IQSEC2

The association supports families affected by IQSEC2 gene mutation, a rare neurological condition that affects brain development, producing intellectual disability, drug-resistant epilepsy, autism spectrum behaviours, as well as motor and communication difficulties. In the absence of a cure, the association’s work is focused on supporting affected families, promoting scientific research and raising social awareness as the single most effective way to improve the quality of life of those suffering from the illness.

Asociación Española Síndrome Schaaf-Yang

Founded in 2019 by families of young people affected by this disease, this association works to raise awareness of Schaaf-Yang syndrome, an ultra-rare genetic conditions cause by mutations in the MAGEL2 gene. There are only 19 diagnosed cases in Spain. The association offers comprehensive support to families, promotes research and collaborates actively with scientific institutions, such as the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and the University of Barcelona, in addition to promoting awareness-raising initiatives and charity events throughout the region.
